Key Stage 4

Year 9 – Gateway to Health & Social Care & Child Development

This course introduces students to some of the key themes and topic areas within Health, Social Care and Child Development. Topics include career pathways, care values, individual needs and differences, care needs of a baby and basic first aid.

This course will lead students onto the Cambridge National in Health & Social Care or the Cambridge National in Child Development.


Cambridge National: Health & Social Care

This course introduces students to the specialist knowledge and skills needed to work in various care settings. Underpinning the qualification is a focus on core values and communicating with individuals to maintain their dignity and sense of being valued.

Students are assessed by the completion of four units: 75% coursework 25% exam

R021: Essential values of care of use with individuals in care settings – examined unit

R022: Communicating and working with individuals in health, social care and early years settings - coursework

R028: Understanding the development and protection of young children in an early years setting – coursework

R031: Using basic first aid procedures – coursework

Cambridge National: Child Development

This course covers all aspects of child development and parental responsibility, from conception to five years. Students develop the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to create the best conditions for a child’s development and well-being.

Students are assessed by the completion of three mandatory units: 50% coursework 50% exam

Cambridge Technical Level 3 Health & Social Care

This course provides learners with the opportunity, through applied learning, to develop core principles and specialist knowledge and understanding required in the health and social care sector.

Students are assessed by the completion of six units made up of mandatory and optional units.

Year 12:

Unit 1- Building positive relationships in health and social care - coursework

Unit 2 - Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care – examined unit (1.5hrs)

Unit 3- Health, safety and security in health and social care – examined unit (1.5hrs)

Year 13:

Unit 4 - Anatomy and physiology for health and social care – examined unit (2hrs)
